Sad news from Australia, as word has reached us all that Andy Whitfeld, the Welsh-born breakout star of Starz' "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" has died.
He was 39 years-old.
He was diagnosed 18 months ago with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma when the second season of Starz's series had readied for production.
Starz replaced him with Liam McIntyre after a prequel. "Gods of the Arena" was put together to buy some time for the actor's recovery.
Mr. Whitfield passed away in Sydney, his manager Sam Maydew told the Associated Press.
Mr. Whitfield's wife Vashti in a statement called her husband a "beautiful young warrior" who died on a "sunny Sydney morning" in the "arms of his loving wife."
Starz Network Comment on Andy Whitfield:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield. We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in 'Spartacus' and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.”
Rest in peace Andy; incredibly sad news on a somber and heartbreaking day.
