Colbert, the satirical host of Comedy Central’s faux news show “Colbert Report,” got permission on Thursday to form a political action committee (PAC) and promote it on his series.
CNN reported that the Federal Election Commission ruled Colbert could promote his PAC, the Colbert Super-PAC, on his show without triggering disclosure rules for Viacom, the parent company of Comedy Central.
The caveat is he can only promote it on his Comedy Central show.
“There will be others who say, ‘Stephen Colbert, what will you do with the unrestricted Super-PAC money?’ ” Mr. Colbert told Associated Press reporters after the F.E.C. hearing. “To which I say, I don’t know. Give it to me and let’s find out.”
Colbert’s PAC quest was born of his mocking the Supreme Court decision allowing Citizens United v. F.E.C., which greenlit unlimited amounts of corporate donations in campaigns.
The commissioners voted 5-to-1 for his request.
