Based on an Australian hit about a depressed man and his "dog," "Wilfred" premiered Thursday to 2.6 million total viewers, the highest-ever opening for an FX comedy premiere, according to the Nielsens.

FX sent us the newest promo for "Wilfred" which airs Thursday nights at 10:00 PM ET/PT.

Viewers turned up for "Wilfred," FX's quirky comedy premiere.

Based on an Australian hit about a depressed man and his "dog," "Wilfred" premiered Thursday to 2.6 million total viewers, the highest-ever opening for an FX comedy premiere, according to the Nielsens.

The series stars Elijah Wood as a young man who is tasked to watch a neighbor's dog (played by Jason Gann in a deliberately tatty canine costume).

"Wilfred" outscored all other FX comedy premieres, including "Lucky" (2.5 million), "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" (1.4 million) and "Archer" (1.8 million)
