After the feel-good, kinder, gentler (what makeup/clothers/hair is Jennifer Lopez wearing show) 'American Idol" and the screech-a-thon that is "So You Think You Can Dance" (Mary Murphy Mulligan alert) comes NBC's hat tossed in this ring: "The Voice."

The new reality show, from the prolific and cheerful Mark Burnett and hosted by Carson Daly (great choice), premieres Tuesday at 9 p.m.  It's very good for the genre in that the superficiality of these competitions, (age, weight, attractiveness) are not the deciding factor; it is purely the voice of the contestant.

"The Voice" turns the tables and has the celebrity coaches competing against each other in their selection and subsequent grooming of their talented unknown charges.

First, contestants perform for the four coaches - Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, and Blake Shelton - as they sit with their backs to the performers.

If a contestant is selected by a star coach, he or she gets placed on that coach’s team.

Now it gets a bit tricky: If two or more coaches decide on the same person, they must battle for the contestant.

The sussed out teams of eight then get mentored, and cut down to four. The 16 finalists then compete for the grand prize.

Watch the preview below, and tell M&C what you think. We love it, do you?
