Valentine’s Day is coming, so romance is in the air at the Jeffersonian!
Here’s this episode’s summary from tv.com: “A botched bike stunt leaves the remains of a BMX rider on a warehouse roof. Hodgins and the team at the lab investigate the skeleton's multiple fractures, while Brennan and Booth interview the other stunt participants. Elsewhere, Sweets once again asks Booth's advice about Daisy, and Booth comes to a decision about Hannah.”
“I’m not the marrying kind.” Those words really broke Booth’s heart this time. Hannah is correct, of course--she’s let him know that several times. But Brennan did say that he’s looking for an idealized relationship, and that wasn’t to be.
Booth spent much of the hour preparing to pop the question, even going with Sweets to shop for rings. Of course, this returns the dynamic between Booth and Brennan to previous levels, which will be interesting to see how their relationship is impacted. It was good that Bones was there to comfort Booth in the final moments of the show. I think their friendship may yet blossom into something more, but sometimes a friend is just what you need instead of a lover.
I also found Sweets’ longing for Daisy and his realization that if he has to think about how much he’s spending on a diamond ring for her, then he’s not really in love. I guess he’s “in lust” then. It’s poignant to see a psychiatrist who can usually find the flaws in the logic of others be completely unable to apply any of that to his own life.
Squint Colin Fisher’s return is made even funnier than usual when his attempts to use meditation to block out his dark thoughts. Unfortunately for everyone else around him, that means having to yell over the music in his earbuds as well as enduring the odd-smelling “tea” he’s drinking. Still, he does come up with some important developments as the case unfolds. Joel Moore continues to serve up one of the most interesting of the interns we see at the Jeffersonian.
This week’s case was an interesting murder mystery. One of the great things about procedural shows like “Bones” is that we get to learn about different cultures or groups that we might not encounter on our own. This time, the focus was on BMX bike riders who endure quite a lot of physical punishment to attain recognition and an endorsement from a related business.
The best part of the mystery was when Andrea used her computer to reconstruct exactly what happened. (That computer is getting to do more and more unusual things these days.) In typical “Bones” fashion, we zig and zag from suspect to suspect until we land on just who murdered the man on the roof. As usual, paying attention to each possible murderer helps, and this solution is a good one. I’m glad it was a crime of the moment instead of a long-festering hatred, the kind that so often takes place on television shows.
The person who is obvious by her absence during much of this week’s show is Bones herself. Brennan does have some pivotal moments in several storylines, but we see her much less than normal, it seemed to me. But the focus on Booth’s relationship with Hannah did make the camera look at him a lot more than usual, so I’m sure we’ll get back to normal “face time” for Brennan next time.
Speaking of next time, the episode is titled, “The Bikini in the Soup.” Valentine's Day brings its own stress to the team in different ways. Cam asks for a timely conclusion to the current case—a wedding planner whose tanning bed contains her liquefied remains—so she can make her Valentine's date. Hodgins, meanwhile, tries to create a whole day of romance for Angela with mixed results. Brennan and Booth, in the meantime, try to play down its importance.
