The folks at AMC seem to know what they are doing.
The network, home to "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad" and the cryptic "Rubicon" is now ground zero for the zombie genre lovers, as Robert Kirkman's eponymous graphic novel has been brought to life by the likes of Frank Darabont and award-winning prosthetic makeup genius Greg Nicotero, the "N" in KNB EFX Group.
Add to the great material, which exhibits more emotional core than most zombie tales, AMC and producers cast two stars in particular that are superb: Jon Bernthal as lusty "Shane" and his police partner Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) our protagonist on the search for his family.
The premiere drew a total of 5.3 million viewers.
With those kinds of numbers, AMC wisely renewed "The Walking Dead" for a 13-episode second season. Considering all the procedural cop, lawyer, marshal, CSI, PI and lame network comedies, this is very good news.
