National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Wade Davis spent years in Haiti studying the Voodoo culture and the mystery of zombies. Tied closely to the history of slavery in the country, zombies in Haitian Voodoo are individuals whose souls have been stolen by sorcery, placing them in a state of perpetual purgatory.
The Truth Behind Zombies examines the combination of belief systems, rituals and poisons used by a witch doctor within the Voodoo culture to create a zombie and investigates whether other tactics like hypnosis could also be at work.
