Bones has been on top of its game so far this season. First they made fun of bad reality TV with last week’s episode, and this week I am thrown back to the early nineties watching David Alan Grier portray the Science Dude, who reminds me a lot of Bill Nye the Science Guy.
What I liked even better this episode was that Hannah (Katheryn Winnick) was not present nor mentioned at all. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am not convinced of Booth’s (David Boreanaz) love for her and I would rather the show focus on Booth and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and their relationship.
A head, hands and hair are found in a dumpster and the squints gather enough information for the victim to be identified as one bounty hunter known as Wolf. Dr. Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) finds BBQ sauce and and bugs in the hair which allows him to pinpoint the victims location prior death. Booth has a cadaver dog scout the area and sure enough the rest of the body is found.
The Science Dude approaches Bones and asks her to be on the show. She declines but the Dude is not that easy to get rid of. He makes a deal with Bones - if he is helpful on the case she comes on the show.
He proves to be helpful, despite some misgivings on Bones’ part. Dude discovers that something small, like a bullet, straight to the heart killed the victim. Booth upon further analysis finds that a piece of the victim’s rib, not a bullet, was the actual cause of death.
Even more perplexing is that the victim’s rib was injured a week prior to death.
The team is stumped. Hodgins and Dude build a dummy victim using a balloon for a head and paint strips for ribs and proceed to throw, shoot, and sling various objects trying to determine the murder weapon. Dude builds a potato launcher and they discover that a weapon of that caliber is the murder weapon.
Meanwhile, Booth and Brennan learn that the bounty hunter was chasing a skip by the name of Charles Braverman (Zac Henry). They believe Braverman is trying to hurt his wife as she is a witness for the prosecution in his case. They go to her to warn her and find Braverman coming and chase him down.
He escapes and jumps out a window because another bounty hunter Janet (Lisa LeBlanc) interferes.
Booth receives a tape anonymously sent it that shows the Wolf’s boss hitting him in the ribs with a pool queue during an argument. The boss (Thomas Kopache) is brought in for questioning and declares his innocence - he even brought in proof - a taped conversation between the skip and his wife. Turns out that the wife was hiding him.
Using Dr. Sweets (John Francis Daley) psychology and Bones’ knowledge of the human body, the team realizes that the couple are heading west and that they will need medical attention due to Braverman’s injuries from the fall out the window.
Booth gets a call and he and Bones rush out to capture Braverman. The other bounty hunter, Janet, follows and a chase ensues. It ends when Janet uses a bean bag launcher to take Braverman down.
Ah-HAH! Bean bag launcher. Potato launcher. Practically the same weapon. Case closed.
The show ends with a charming segment of Bones coming out on the Science Dude show dressed as skeleton with a tutu. It was fun to see her dressed and acting silly, and as Angela (Michaela Conlin) would say, she was embracing her inner child.
