Tune in alert for NBC News' Ann Curry, who spent a week traveling with George Clooney through Southern Sudan.  Their trip was meant to shed light on the tensions building in that region.

Clooney will join Curry live in-studio on “Today,” Tuesday, October 12 to discuss their trip.

Background, from NBC

In three months, on January 9, the people of Southern Sudan will vote on whether to secede from the rest of the country. A civil war between Northern and Southern Sudan ended in 2005 after two decades of fighting, and an estimated two million people lost their lives. The vote could lead to another deadly war and genocide. Clooney told Curry, “If you knew a tsunami, or Katrina or a Haiti earthquake was coming, what would you do to save people?”

Curry conducted a series of interviews with Clooney as they traveled along the border of Northern and Southern Sudan. The trip marks the second time they traveled together to the region. In February 2009 they made the journey to Chad to report on the violence and ethnic cleansing taking place in Darfur. Clooney is a longtime outspoken Darfur activist, and Curry has traveled to and reported from the region for NBC News six times.

In addition to the “Today” segment, “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” will air Curry’s reports from Sudan next week, and in the coming months, “Dateline NBC” will air an hour-long special.

Jim Bell is the executive producer of “Today,” (Mon.-Fri., 7-11 a.m.).
