Syfy brings the all-new series "Beast Legends" premiering this Thursday, September 9th at 10/9c.
Probably no legendary creature was as horrifying as the Kraken, a giant sea monster. According to stories this huge, many armed, creature looked like an island when motionless and could reach as high as the top of a sailing ship's main mast with its arms deployed. Here is what I know about the Kraken:
The best stories about the Kraken seem to hale from Norway, primarily from the twelfth century, and refer to a creature the size of an island.
Even in 1752, when the Bishop of Bergen, Erik Ludvigsen Pontoppidan, noted: "It seems these are the creatures's arms, and, it is said, if they were to lay hold of the largest man-of-war, they would pull it down to the bottom."
Krakens were reported mainly by many drunken Vikings from Scandinavia.
Bombed out of their gourds on Aquavit, Norse fishermen would go back to the fjords and spin doozies like this: "Large schools of fish gravitate around Kraken and the boat that succeeds to fish around the monster without awaking it will take more than possible to carry aboard."
I mean, what do you say? Norwegians are a hoot.
There is also a Kraken Rum I hear, and if you make this particular potion, please get in touch with me asap. Would love to review it.
