HBO comic and regular on Howard Stern's radio show, Robert Schimmel is reported to be in very serious condition after a car accident on Thursday, reported TMZ.com.
Schimmel’s 19-year-old daughter was driving on an Arizona highway at the time of the accident, as she reportedly swerved to avoid another vehicle, causing their car to roll over onto the side of the road.
Schimmel’s daughter was hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition, while Schimmel’s 11-year-old son, who was also in the vehicle, was released Thursday without any injuries. Schimmel is still in the hospital and in "very serious" condition and his family is at his bedside, according to TMZ.
Schimmel has been married twice. He and his first wife Vicki had four children, and their son, Derek, died at age 11 from cancer.
He later married his second wife Melissa, and together they had two sons. In 2009 he was arrested at his home in Calabasas, CA for a domestic disturbance, and later divorced Melissa that same year.
Schimmel is a heart attack (1998) and cancer survivor who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2000 and underwent chemotherapy.
He wrote the book Cancer on $5 a Day (chemo not included): How Humor Got Me Through the Toughest Journey of My Life about his struggle with the disease.
Schimmel, the son of Holocaust survivors who relocated to Arizona, also revealed he is suffering from cirrhosis of the liver as a result of a Hepatitis C infection from a blood transfusion that he received while in the Air Force.
