GREAT PERFORMANCES “Dance in America: NY Export: Opus Jazz” (#3508) (TV-G) (HD)

A new production of choreographer Jerome Robbins’ 1958 “ballet in sneakers,” NY Export: Opus Jazz, filmed in the five boroughs of New York City.

A “ballet in sneakers” choreographed by the legendary Jerome Robbins in 1958, NY Export: Opus Jazz was a breakout success in its day, complete with a world tour and a broadcast on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Set to an evocative jazz score by Robert Prince with original abstract urban sets designed by Ben Shahn, the five movements blend ballet, jazz and ballroom with Latin, African and American rhythms to create a style that remains expressive, sensual and contemporary. Yet Opus Jazz has been infrequently performed by ballet companies since its debut and never adapted for film. Co-conceived and produced by New York City Ballet principal dancers Ellen Bar and Sean Suozzi, this new film production takes the overlooked Robbins’ masterpiece off the stage and places it into the landscapes that inspired it, filmed on locations all over the five boroughs of New York City.

The 16 emblematic characters are city kids drawn together by their youth, their energy and their hunger for life, but this Opus Jazz takes them out of the 50s and into today; although fashions and skylines change, the experience of being young in New York belongs to every generation. Completing the program is background material on the original Robbins production, as well as interviews with the cast and creators on the process of recreating the work for a new era.

Jacques Offenbach’s fictionalized take on the life and loves of the German Romantic writer E.T.A. Hoffmann is a fascinating psychological journey. Met music director James Levine conducts Joseph Calleja in the tour-de-force title role. Anna Netrebko is the tragic Antonia and Alan Held sings the demonic four villains.

The struggles and triumphs of the first year of an innovative public high school in New York City’s South Bronx.

This film chronicles the struggles and triumphs of the first year of the Bronx Center for Science & Mathematics, an innovative public high school in New York City’s South Bronx. This deeply emotional, character-driven documentary focuses on the school’s dynamic rookie principal and a spunky ninth-grade girl with big dreams but even bigger obstacles.

The personal stories of the school’s students and staff call to mind larger themes of school reform and the need for educators, parents and policy makers to prioritize the transformation of the public school system so that all children can receive a quality education. Grittily realistic, yet ultimately triumphant, “Whatever It Takes” paints a compelling picture of cutting-edge ideas and dedicated individuals, united in their vision to restore hope to a broken community. The speech, delivered exactly one year before the date of his assassination, is considered pivotal but often under-appreciated. King challenged the morality of the Vietnam conflict and urged a national discussion about the role of America in the world. Smiley examines the context of Dr. King’s words on liberty, responsibility and freedom against the backdrop of the fight for civil rights and an increasingly unpopular war, and examines the implications of his words today, particularly in light of President Obama’s decision to increase U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

THE STREET STOPS HERE (TV-G) (HD)

Portrait of high school basketball coach Bob Hurley Sr. and his lifelong commitment to improve the lives of inner city kids and save the high school that gives them hope.

THE STREET STOPS HERE is a portrait of the nation’s best high school basketball coach, Bob Hurley Sr., and his career-long struggle to inspire and motivate those around him in order to keep the doors of an inner-city Catholic school open. This is a story about teenagers fighting their way out of the ’hood, armed with little more than a basketball and the hard wisdom of a fierce, demanding coach. For 35 years, Hurley has led St. Anthony his way. He’s an uncompromising teacher who demands perfection from kids who’ve known little discipline growing up on the streets of Jersey City. His methodical yet volatile style works miracles. He’s tallied 900-plus victories for a school that’s won 24 state championships. Hurley’s sent to college all but two of the hundreds of players he’s coached, a feat that truly shows what matters most to him.

This season, Hurley faces challenges that will test his resolve. The most talented senior class he’s ever assembled, with six seniors headed to Division One schools, is about to graduate without having won a state championship — something that’s never happened to one of his teams.

Even worse, a financial crisis threatens to close the high school to which he’s dedicated his life. Intimate and inspiring, THE STREET STOPS HERE is the story of a man’s lifelong commitment to improve the lives of inner city kids and save the high school that gives them hope.

This episode focuses on savannahs and grasslands, where the planet’s largest concentrations of herd animals come up against some of nature’s most successful hunters. In Africa’s Serengeti, wildebeest, built like marathon runners, are under constant attack from lions, born sprinters.

Both are speedy. But as long as the wildebeest maintain a 50-yard safety zone when lions are near, their risk of becoming lunch is greatly reduced. In California’s grasslands, ground squirrels face a regular battle with rattlesnakes that hunt using heat-detecting organs located on the sides of their heads.

The squirrels have developed a surprising defensive strategy of deception. When faced with a venomous viper, instead of running away, the squirrel stays put and flicks its tail to increase its heat profile, fooling the snake into believing it’s larger than it actually is. Other animals explored in this episode are the giraffe, with its miraculously long neck, and the elephant and its multifunctional trunk.

The story of the life of the Buddha, an Indian sage who gained enlightenment as he sat under a fig tree. Richard Gere narrates.

Two and a half millennia ago, a new religion was born in northern India, generated from the ideas of a single man, the Buddha, a mysterious Indian sage who famously gained enlightenment while he sat under a large, shapely fig tree. The Buddha never claimed to be God or his emissary on earth. He said only that he was a human being who, in a world of unavoidable pain and suffering, had found a kind of serenity that others could find, too. This documentary by award-winning filmmaker David Grubin tells the story of his life, a journey especially relevant in our own bewildering times of violent change and spiritual confusion. NATURE “Moment of Impact: Jungle” (#2710) (TV-PG) (HD)

Looks at the incredible bio-engineering of jungle residents, both on the ground and in the forest canopy.

This episode looks at the incredible bio-engineering of jungle residents, both on the ground and in the forest canopy. Leaf-cutter ants are capable of carrying materials 10 times their weight. Equally impressive, the jaws of trap-jaw ants can produce a bite force 300 times their own body weight — stronger than that of a shark’s. Cuban crocodiles have the unlikely ability to leap up to six feet straight out of the water to catch their prey, while basilisk lizards walk on water, thanks to their wide-webbed feet and unique gaits. No wonder the basilisk is called the “Jesus lizard.” Among many other animal talents explored, “Jungle” also looks at a how ospreys dive for fish and how a bat “swims” through the air.

FRONTLINE “Obama’s Deal” (#2815) (EXEMPT) (HD)

Healthcare reform was the first big policy deal taken on by the Obama administration. Many say the president has bet the mid-term elections, possibly his presidency, on the outcome. In a new investigation, FRONTLINE goes behind closed doors at the White House, in Congress and the boardrooms of the giant healthcare lobby to examine the political battles and costly compromises that defined Barack Obama’s endeavor.

From early positive efforts, through the bitter battles with the Tea Party, the elation of apparent success at Christmas, to the crushing failure in the Massachusetts senatorial election, FRONTLINE follows the story and reveals the first in-depth look at how the Obama administration operates. In “Obama’s Deal,” FRONTLINE veteran producer Michael Kirk (“Bush’s War,” “Dreams of Obama,” “Inside the Meltdown,” “The Warning”) provides a sobering exposé of the realities of American politics, the power of special interest groups and the role of money in policy-making.

Safe in Palestine in 1944, Senesh joined a mission to rescue Jews in her native Hungary. It was the only military rescue mission for Jews during the Holocaust. Senesh parachuted behind enemy lines, was captured, tortured and ultimately executed by the Nazis. Her mother, Catherine, witnessed the entire ordeal — first as a prisoner with Hannah and later as her advocate, braving the bombed-out streets of Budapest in a desperate attempt to save her daughter.
