HBO inks Kate Winslet for 'Mildred Pierce'

HBO announced Kate Winslet is set to take the role Joan Crawford won an Oscar for many years ago, based on the novel by James M. Cain.
Variety reports that the five-hour miniseries is the story of a single mother Mildred Pierce (Kate Winslet) struggling to earn her daughter's love during the depression in middle-class Los Angeles.
Crawford won the lead role in the 1945 Michael Curtiz-directed film adaptation of the novel. The film swept the nominations, six total.
The location for the production is New York, and penning the script is executive producer Todd Haynes and Jon Raymond. Haynes is set to direct.
Also serving as executive producer are Pamela Koffler, Christine Vachon, and John Wells.
HBO miniseries have done well for the network, with the success of "Band of Brothers" comes the new 10-episode World War II epic "The Pacific" on March 14. The series is produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman.
