Sunday nights are just not complete without seeing HBO's Big Love, which is dotted with so many excellent character actors and wonderful roles for women it makes my head spin.

My two favorite actresses on the series are Grace Zabriskie (Lois) and Mary Kay Place (Adaleen), the eccentric, conniving matriarchs of the series who make it a no miss TV event for me.
Adaleen's infamous "I need bacon!" scene luring her daughter (Chloe Sevigny) into the walk-in freezer to find the dead Prophet (her dad, played by Harry Dean Stanton) was one of my favorites of this fourth season, so far.
Now HBO confirms that a fifth season comes as steady gains in viewership have propelled the series to a top ratings performer.
“Big Love” sees Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton) as he runs for state senator, and another fine actress, Sissy Spacek, looms in his orbit as a powerful Washington DC kingmaker.
HBO says they have picked up 10 episodes for season five.
The “Big Love” premise is all-American, as the fundamentalist Mormon sects are explored with Paxton’s character who has three wives, Barb (Jeanne Tripplehorn), Nicki (Chlo¸ Sevigny) and Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin), plus eight kids, three houses and a chain of home improvement box stores.
He also has crazy parents (Zabriskie and Bruce Dern) and a troublesome brother, and lots of issues with his older kids who seem to be rejecting the family religion, the eldest son taking a shine to his youngest wife, who was the ex babysitter.
The series was nominated last year for an Emmy in the outstanding drama series category.
