After going on record that she wanted to revamp her sound on her new record, Jones enlisted the help of a producer who had previously worked with Kings of Leon and Modest Mouse, and also brought in Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff as co-writers. These choices led to speculation that the jazz chanteuse might be headed in a rocky new direction. Far from a departure, however, The Fall finds the Grammy-winning musician maintaining her jazzy, sultry sound while pushing into more contemporary pop territory.
Bruce Warren, program director for NPR Member station WXPN 88.5 in Philadelphia, says that The Fall “showcases Jones' musical depth in exciting and unexpected ways, suitable for old fans and newcomers alike.” Hear the entire album here
