Gervais made his bones first on the smallscreen. His role as David Brent in the original UK TV series "The Office" put him on the map. Gervais is an admirer of the long-running American animated family, "The Simpsons," and he turned out one of the most emotionally resplendent Christmas 2007/finale episodes on "Extras," taking tabloid culture and the shallowness of celebrity life to task. It was this exceptional season of the short-lived HBO series that earned an Emmy for Gervais as Outstanding Lead Actor in a comedy series.
Now the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards has bucked their typical format and selected Ricky Gervais, a bona fide film star now, as the evening's master of ceremonies.
Gervais will serve as the first host since 1995, released a statement expressing his excitement over having "free reign" during the Globes, according to Variety.
"Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host," said Gervais. "I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are some things you don't turn down."
