Robin Williams, who first appeared on HBO more than three decades ago, will return to HBO this December for a unique stand-up event from Washington, D.C., marking his first solo special on the network in seven years, it was announced today by Nancy Geller, senior vice president, HBO Entertainment.
Taping at DAR Constitution Hall this November for December debut, the exclusive comedy event Robin Williams: Weapons Of Self-Destruction will feature the Oscar®-winner at one of the stops on his current sold-out national tour.
“Robin Williams has been synonymous with stellar original comedy throughout HBO’s history, and we’re delighted to join him for the latest chapter in his amazing career,” noted Geller.
Williams catapulted to fame in 1978 on the TV sitcom, “Mork and Mindy,” then appeared in 1977 for HBO's “Young Comedians” special. He went on to star in four solo specials on the network: “On Location: Robin Williams” (1978), “An Evening with Robin Williams” (1983), “Robin Williams: An Evening at the Met” (1986) and “Robin Williams: Live on Broadway” (2002), which received five Emmy® nominations, in addition to performing on a variety of other HBO specials and series.
Along with Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg, Williams was one of the hosts of all nine “Comic Relief” all-star charity benefit specials on HBO.
Williams has racked up four Golden Globe awards, as well as the Cecil B. DeMille Award, four Grammys, three Oscar nominations and an Oscar win for “Good Will Hunting."
Robin Williams' HBO event will be produced and directed by Marty Callner, whose previous HBO credits include comedy specials starring Will Ferrell, Sandra Bernhard, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld and George Carlin, as well as Robin Williams.
