Jordin Sparks wears a purity ring because she doesn't want to look like a "sl*t".
The 'American Idol' winner, who wears the band on her left ring finger to show she won't have sex before marriage, has spoken out against promiscuous teenagers.
She said: "I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It's not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody - guy or girl - wants to be a sl*t."
Jordin, 18, made the passionate speech at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles last night (07.09.08), after the show's host Russell Brand ridiculed the Jonas Brothers for wearing purity rings.
The British comic, who claimed the young musicians should be using their celebrity status to date, later apologized for his comments, saying: "I didn't meant to take it lightly. I don't want to p*ss off teenage fans."
He added cheekily: "Promise rings, I'm well up for it. But a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody."
Earlier this year, Jordin was romantically linked to R'n'B singer-songwriter Steph Jones.

Who is this guy anyway? I never even HEARD of him before the VMAs. While I think that it's admirable that the Jonas Brothers and Jordin Sparks are choosing to wait, that may not be the right choice for everyone. Simply having sex doesn't make someone a slut. Some people are ready before marriage. Others aren't. It doesn't make one way better or worse than the other -- just right or wrong for each individual person.

I don't understand why is it ok for a man to make fun of these young guys who are trying to go against everything this country trys to get kids to do but it is not ok for a girl to be hurt by his remarks and use the word Slut...does anyone know how hard it must be for those kids as it is? They do not need someone literally peer pressuring them by making fun of them on the MTV music awards. As for Jorden; should she have said that in that way...NO...but the frustration that comes from doing something good and being belittled something good probally became to much for the young girl and she shot back on the same platform. I just don't understand why she becomes the person who is more wrong in this situation...and why people are just saying 'yeah yeah, good for them, they will probally end up just like Brittny Spears'. Lets try to make a big deal out of how hard this is for them and what Character it shows if they can follow through!
