Highlights include:
Mike Myers on live performances -
“Live is unbelievable. Gilda Radner used to talk about ‘Saturday Night Live’ as an under rehearsed performance once a week, Dana Carvey said it was like being shot out of a cannon without a net and I used to feel like it was flying to Tokyo twice a week.”
Mike Myers on why he decided to do a “spiritual” film -
“My father died in 1991 and two things emerged creatively – Austin Powers that was a tribute to my father and all the British comedy he has introduced me to and also the Guru Pitka in the The Love Guru. In 1994, I did a stage show with five characters and two were these characters. One was dealing was his life and the other was his death.”
Mike Myers on comedians he admires -
“I love Charlie Chaplin because he was a full vision comedian. He creates a persona and a whole world around that persona…Buster Keaton is a master of film staging…All of these guys were very concerned about making every second of it (the film) being great entertainment and that’s what I aspire to.”
Mike Myers on which celebrity inspired the hairy chest in Austin Powers
“Sean Connery. He’s the hairiest person on the planet. Bless him. He’s a god in my estimation and in my house, but my father used to say, ‘You notice, you don’t see Sasquatch and Sean Connery in the same photo.’”
Mike Myers on pressure to change the song Bohemian Rhapsody in Wayne’sWorld -
“At the time, there was tremendous pressure on me for the song not to beBohemian Rhapsody, but to be Guns N’ Roses. In fact, on my desk atParamount, there was a Billboard with Guns N’ Roses number one circledin red, but that wasn’t the song of my streets. It was based on being inmy brother’s Toyota Celica and each of us had a ‘Galileo.’”
Mike Myers on how he reacted when he unexpectedly got a call from BarbraStreisand to perform with her on tour -
“It was an amazing moment. I was on vacation in Hawaii and my brother Paul will often call saying he’s different (famous) people… I was like ‘Hey Paul’ and heard ‘This is Barbra Steisand.’ I literally ran into the closet like an animal – like how a wolf goes into a hollow log for safety. It was the weirdest reaction. I did it in Las Vegas and Madison Square Garden…The audience was like Madam Tussards. It was an out-of-body experience - like that guy looks like Jack Nicholson. It is Jack Nicholson.”
