"The Hills" reality TV stars appear to have made a Faustian bargain with each other: agree to hate each others guts in silence as each one builds an empire of dilettante fashion wear and continued success in the DListed "paid to show up" celebrity event circuit.

At a recent Rolling Stone magazine shoot, Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag grimaced and bore it as they posed for the magazine.
“We were on good behavior,” Lauren told Access Hollywood of the cover shoot. “I mean there’s definitely bad energy between us, but I’m not angry… We’re civil with each other.”
Rolling Stone noted that the two kept it quiet between them, despite their known enmity for each other.
“That’s civil for us,” Lauren commented to Access Hollywood. “If we did talk, it wouldn’t be nice words. So that’s the only relationship we’ll be able to have — silence.”
Lauren and Heidi fell out over a purported sex tape around the time of Heidi's boob job, and her boyfriend is rumored to have contributed to the hearsay.
The fallout continued on the air (Ryan Seacrest's show) and various Internet blogs.

Both actresses understand their mutual hate-hate co-dependency is necessary to continue the MTV "Hills" franchise success.
“There’s no point to it,” she said to Access Hollywood. “We just have this weird rivalry. There’s something really high school about it. But instead of writing rude things about each other on the bathroom wall, we do it through tabloids. I don’t always reciprocate – I’m not going to be childish.”
The resulting bad blood between the two women has been a launch board of sorts for the grasping ambitious boyfriend of Heidi Montag, "Spencer", who insinuates himself into every photo opportunity and event with Montag calling himself her "manager.".
“People love feuds,” Spencer said to Access Hollywood. “Who were Paris and Nicole before they weren’t friends? That’s when they became superstars. If Lauren and Heidi were friends, people wouldn’t tune in.”
