PBS newsman Jim Lehrer recovers from surgery

Jim Lehrer, the respected American news anchor for PBS, is recovering at Massachusetts General Hospital after undergoing heart surgery Wednesday.

Lehrer, the 73-year-old anchorman fell ill last Friday and cancelled planned trips to Pittsburgh - the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer broadcast was to cover the Pennsylvania Presidential primary on location. Lehrer had a heart-valve procedure.The operation was "a complete success," according to Anne Bell, spokeswoman for the NewsHour. "Jim plans to be back at full speed and on the program within a few weeks."Bell said, "Ever the editor, Jim wrote the statement himself that will be read on the air tonight."Get-well messages to Lehrer can be sent at www.pbs.org/newshour.
