I have been straight edge for over 12 years now, and heavily involved in the scene. Every few years something like this will come out. Its usually from reporters who dont know anything about the hardcore or the straight edge scene. Even in this article, they dont mention that the killing in salt lake city was over 10 years ago, and straight edge was not associated with the murder other then the killer was straight edge. Thats like saying that all rappers are drug dealers... is just not the truth. You wont see these reporters talking about how straight edge is over 25 years old, and has helped keep more kids off of drugs then ay government program ever has. If you want a view into what straight edge really is, read my straight edge manifesto, me an email JoshHighland@gmail.com, or google my name and find my straight edge manifesto (i cant put links into this post)

Straight Edge has nothing to do with 'premarital sex'. Straight Edge is not Christianity. Straight Edgers do believe in not being promiscuous which is completely different from premarital sex.

Great, an excellent opportunity to shed some light on a pretty positive subculture that instead, will just show the 'bad' aspects, which are really few are far between now a days.
Couldn't agree more with Josh Highland.

Well hopefully we will see a better treatment of the topic than we have seen in the past, especially the Geraldo Rivera interview where he pretty much took one side of the matter and focused on the negative minority within the scene and scared the hell out of a lot of people who weren't familiar with sXe. i've been straight edge now for 17 years, more than half my life, and I've seen some wonderful and some terrible things stem from this subculture. All I hope is that Nat Geo actually does cover both sides and does a good job shining light on the POSITIVE side of the sXe lifestyle and not only on those who ally themselves to this 'hate edge' branch.

This has potential to be good and show the positive aspects of straight edge, however I am sure it will focus on the violent side of things because that is what sells and brings in ratings. I hope they surprise me. Also, NGC needs to get their P words in order as someone mentioned earlier. Do your research people!

I can see thsi going in the direction of them mentioning momentarily on the positives of being straight edge and then spend the rest of their time going on about the negatives people need to understand that its probably less then 1 or 2 percent of the kids whom are straight edge who are being idiots and that Geraldo Rivera interview was the most ridiculous one sided thing i had ever seen not only was he not giving the kid who represented the straight edge side a chance to really talk but that kid was an idiot they could have chosen a waaaaay better representative to talk on behalf of edge kids

This is going to do exactly the same thing as the rolling stone article on FSU. Just like before stated every couple of years some news company gets wind of something negative being involved with straight edge or the hardcore scene in general and than they throw in a few 'positive' remarks about it edgewise to justify bashing it in front of millions of people on tv and on the internet. Get educated.

this is a tired subject. this scene was great up until the mid 90's - then it became not only a worse boy's club than it ever was but a tired cliche doomed by its own rules. free will and logical thinking will always prevail...

i don't care what you'll say, straight edge people are not pleasant and generally very arrogant, just like the punks, kids from the bottom of the bucket trying to fit in to anything like a fraternity. these kids are violent, how bout that FSU kid who killed someone in Asbury Park NJ for wearing a confederate flag shirt ? where is the sense in that it's a t-shirt! you kids wearing kill your local drug dealer shirts, you think a pot dealer really causes harm? and what do you fools have to say about medical marijuana HUH? i see you drinking coffe ' a drug '

All of those guys that think that they are hard should come up to my crew, so i can blow smoke in there face. If you piss me off I'll show up to their house, knock on the door, beat their face in, and robb obb. If your Edge than you should just kill your self or I'll do it for you.

Regardless if this subject is tired or its not, its still gonna be there, and law enforcement will always have problems with social movements. for one: the guy who said straight edge kids are pussy's, honestly dude do you really think that kids who want the change so bad would be out there beating the crap outta kids if they were truely 'pussy's!?' i doubt it, and for the crews and supporters of drinking, smoking, and drug abuse...what're you kids planning on doing with your life in the years to come? This exact reason is why straight edge decided to peak back in like 2000. Im neither a supporter of anti-straight edge, nor am i straight edge. I respect those who are, and those who aren't. You guys gotta also understand that witht the days to come people are starting to wake up and see that all that negativity is wrong and they're turning to christ now....thats the new straight edge(at least in so cal). either way the kids trying to make the difference are just sick of eveyone laughing in their faces and looking down upon them, that why the jumping and the killings happen, take them seriously and don't get in they're way. Respectfully though....those of you who thrive your life off of drinking and smoking and living life up, its all gonna end up to be a waste of time and that life isn't all its hyped up to be.

Ya know, people shouldn't be worried about us, they should be worried about the drug dealers, smokers, and drinkers. I'm getting my first tattoo next year when I'm 18, and guess what it's gonna be...a STRAIGHT EDGE tattoo. I am straight edge. I will never smoke, drink or do drugs because its all for losers. Illegalize drinking and smoking.

I chose straight edge after I watched substance abuse destroy my family at the foundation. I chose straight edge becaue I want everyone else to know that your situation is not dictated by those around you. I have been in the scene for years and years, and have only come into contact with people who take it too far only a couple of times. Those incidents were not well recieved by everyone else involved. Bringing light to misfits and fringe participants while un evenly highlighting the overwhelming positivity undermines everything this movement has accomplished. My bestfriends mom interrogated us for half an hour because she thought we were in a gang. Is this what they want the intended?

Straight Edge is NOT a good thing at all. Kids should be learning to not follow other people and to make their own decisions, and to not follow a group.
Another thing I have a problem with is the kids with the kids that don't understand that there is more to being a good person than not smoking, drinking, or doing other drugs. You can be a good person and do all of those, and you can be a bad person and not do any.
Finally, most 'straight edge' shirts are very angry like the one I saw the other day that said 'emo killaz'. People should respect others not matter what

i don't know many 'good' people who are alcaholic bastards like my father or other serious addicts. my parents threw their lives away drinking and smoking pot and neither of them went to collage and we've been struggling to make ends meet my entire life. i don't want my kids to go through what i went through. its not a stupid trend. its a lifestyle and a personal choice.
