Dailey is scheduled to drop by the CBS Early Show studios on October 17, which will mark his national television debut.
“Back Flipping Forward” will be the first release from the newly launched CBS Records, a label that combines traditional music marketing with direct integration of its artists’ music into television programming on the CBS and CW networks.
The October 2 release of “Back Flipping Forward.” will benefit from the cross-marketing of several joined mediums, especially now because of the completely decimated record label business where they are still scrambling to figure out how to run their businesses profitably, with touring and alternative avenues of revenue making the money for artists.
Dailey notes that a bout of appendicitis which resulted in him being saddled with great debt, he might never have made his album.
“I was out in L.A. doing the whole major label showcase and power lunch hustle. It’s really just a terrible experience,” Dailey says laughing. “You have these people taking you out to lunch, you’re sitting next to all these famous faces and they’re telling you, ‘You’re going to be famous.’ When all you really want to do is make a great record and hit the road.”
Unfortunately, just as things were picking up for Dailey, he was suddenly hospitalized with appendicitis. Like many people, he had no insurance and was hit with a $50,000 hospital bill.
“I get [out of the hospital], limping about, and I didn’t know what to do, so I thought, ‘I gotta go home for a little while. I know how to get back on my feet there,’” Dailey recalls.
“So I come back to Boston and immediately get a phone call from my manager, ‘We’re going to make this record on our own.’ Originally, he wanted to meet with all these producers back in L.A., people who’ve produced Neil Young etc. and I said, ‘I know the perfect guy to do this album with.’”
That guy was Tom Polce. And in working with Polce, as well as friends who Dailey says, “Are amazing musicians who deserved a crack at it all.”
Dailey has come up with a collection of 10 tracks on his new CBS label.
CBS will air Dailey’s guest episode of “CSI:NY” on October 17th.
