Are you kidding, Whoopi? Vick and all others involved in this so-called 'sport' obviously know it's very wrong or they wouldn't go to such extreme lengths to hide their activities. I read a lot of the articles about this 'activity' and these people run it like it was an illegal rave, telling attendees at the last minute where the location of the fight is and placing guards, armed guards, anywhere from five to ten miles down the road, or roads, from where the dog fight takes place. If that alone doesn't prove knowledge of wrong doing I don't what does. Stop making excuses for the bad behavior of any instant celebrities no matter what their ethnic background happens to be. This is cruel and unusual treatment of domestic animals, said animals having no choice in the matter, so a bunch of 20- to 50-year-old little boys can place excessively large wagers just to say 'Mine's bigger than yours.' It's wrong, everyone knows its wrong, and I'm thoroughly disgusted that anyone would speak up in defense of these 'people.'

I was born and raised in the DEEP south and no one I know thinks this is an OK thing to participate in. Not my friends, family or co-workers think harming and or training dogs to kill is acceptable as a 'Southern Thing' to do. I always thought Whoopie was a smart talented person..... not anymore ! ! !

Maybe this is deemed ok in the dark recesses of the South inhabited by illiterate, backwards people, but not in normal society.

I'm glad she made those comments. She isn't the only person out there with this opinion. She represents that view. That's what the 'The View' is all about.

Many people are thinking the same way Whoopi is thinking justthat people rather let go the whole situation rather than bring it up to dog fanatics like many of you on here.Just because people dont agree on a topic in this country doesnt mean they have an opinion. Its funny many of the people here will fight for a dogs life but be pro-choice on the other hand. I guess killing a child since its legal is much better.

I was raised and still live in the Deep South, and I assure you this is not common or accepted. I never even heard of dog fighting until a few years ago, and that incident was not even in the South! From all I have read, this type of activity is more affiliated with people with no class or morals , illegal gambling, and gang activity. It does not speak highly of Vick that he was involved, but no amount of money can inset morals, conscience, values, or class ... whether rich or poor, black or white, from the South or North. He knew it wasn't right, that is why it was hidden, it was the thrill of the gambling, being illegal, and releasing his hidden demons by taking out his violence on these dogs. They weren't just killed, these people enjoyed watching them suffering in pain, dying, and being tortured. This is a much deeper issue than animal rights, and I am so offended that after all these years there is still such misconception about people in the South. The only cultural semblance to the South may be either in the black community or illiterate backwoods boys, but this is NOT what most of us even know about, nor would we tolerate if known.

I don't care if it's 'normal' for third world countries, and 'living in the swamp down south' trash to harm animals for greed and gambling, all of these losers know it's illegal in this country! That's why they scatter when they see the cops coming. How dare she say such a thing! That's like saying it's okay for polygamists in Utah to rape women! Women are lower class citizens, therefore they think it's allright to treat them that way. I guess we shouldn't press charges huh? Ridiculous. Shame on her. I sure hope she was just trying to get some attention.

Are YOU kidding MagdeleneMae? Perhaps you can tell us the difference between dog fighting, deer hunting, duck hunting, cock fighting, or any other animal killing/hunting sport. How is dog fighting illegal and the others are not, that's what we don't understand. Maybe it's because we don't eat dog that often while other countries do. I BET YOU EAT CHICKEN DON'T YOU?.... I think that this situation is a bunch of BULL-POOP/DOODOO, just a bunch of big TERDS to me. Everybody is trying to make an example out of Micheal Vick just because he is a superstar NFL player but what about those who aren't famous that do it and have gotten caught, why didn't they make an example out of them back then. And also what does ethnic backgrounds have to do with anything, who brought that up? Everybody has to realize that this is that man's life that people are trying to terrorize and we all make mistakes and have to learn from them and I believe that he learned from his but I don't feel that his career should be thrown down the drain since everybody wants to act like they just mysteriously got a dog over night all of a sudden. Why is everyone so beaten up about this, I'm not and I have a dog (a pitbull as a matter of fact) but I do not fight dogs at all, is it because humans feel that dogs are human as well, well in that case do you feed your dog out of a doggy bowl or your Grandmother's good China Plate????? I FEEL THAT AS LONG AS YOU ARE ALIVE THAT THERE IS ROOM FOR CHANGE AND WE ALL FALL SHORT AT ONE POINT OR ANOTHER BUT IT TAKES HELP FROM ON ANOTHER AND NOT ALL OF THE MEDIA AND PUBLIC CRITICISM. IT TAKES A STRONG PERSON TO REALIZE THAT YOU NEED TO PICK YOURSELF UP AND TRY AGAIN JUST THIS TIME MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS!

Newleywed, I DO think that cock fighting is just as bad (and it is also just as illegal as dog fighting because they are both considered cruel and unusual for the animals involved), if not worse, than dog fighting, mostly because they attach razors to the legs of the birds and since they strike at each other with their feet, with a razor attached there is obviously going to be much more damage, and pain, all so people can PLACE BETS ON IT. Nobody would ever both to watch a cock fight, or dog fight unless there was money involved.

If Michael Vick really grew up surrounded by dog fighting and thought it was no big deal, then why did he so vehemently deny it and LIE about it. Why didn’t he just say, “Yeah, I’ve done it all my life, it’s part of my cultural heritage, been doing it forever, what’s the big deal.” He told lie after lie after lie until his “friends” rolled on him and agreed to testify against him probably for a lighter sentence.

The only reason I mentioned ethnic backgrounds is that I’ve visited many other forums regarding this case and participated in a few, and some people said that Vick was being picked on simply because he was black. I don’t believe that to be the case. I would despise any person of any color, male or female who participated in something like this.

And, since you obviously don’t read the newspapers or catch the news on tv or online, you would know that for at least 10 years that I’m aware of, cops in large cities have been chasing and arresting people for these crimes. Michael Vick is hardly the first, so again I have to say HOW COULD HE NOT KNOW?

And don’t put words in my mouth. I never said a thing about his career and whether or not it should be taken away from him. I’d be satisfied if he acted like a decent human being.

Don’t forget, this even goes way beyond dog fighting. Did you read what Vick himself said about the “disposal” of the dogs that didn’t fight well enough? With his own hands he killed them, by drowning, electrocution, hanging, etc. If you are going to tell me there is nothing wrong with that, then I will assume there is no hope for you either. You said you had a dog. If he gets sick or is dying are you going to drown him, electrocute him, or are you going to take him to the vet to get a shot to put him peacefully to sleep, as Vick should have done?
