I love the show, but how about the one where he is clearly wearing a life vest under his grey sweatshirt while going down the rapids. He does do the majority of the things, and there is no way I could even fake those! Hes awesome but I saw this coming! Im still a huge fan though!!!
Since when is anything on TV real? Just because he knows a lot about survival and has extensive conditioning doesn't mean it's a walk in the park. If he really did these things without assistance he'd likely be dead or at least severely injured or ill. The fact that he is shown eating those nasty things and climbing rock faces without equipment makes it real enough for me. It's for entertainment and educational viewing and I'm not the least bit disappointed if he stays in a hotel or has others there to help him.
Yes, I have seen the life vest under the jacket and wondered if he would really put his life in direct danger for the show without backup. But who cares. Bear is great and the show is fun to watch. There is no way 99% of
us would do half the stuff he does. So he may take a break and stay in a motel for a night. Give him a break, Bear is risking his life so I can sit in my comfortable chair and watch. Bear keep up the great work and Discovery channel, we watch you all the time. You are so much better than the garbage on the other channels.
I watched the episode with the raft last night. What worries me is that some of the things he does are suggested to be 'survival techniques' that viewers could use should said viewers find themselves in a similar situation. There is no way that building a raft like that and just jumping in a river you know nothing about is a good idea, survivalist or not. It is, however, a good way to get yourself killed.
Put me in I would do it all.
It's a fasinating show and I'm hooked. Let's remember that It's a TV show and sometimes they may have to do things in order to keep everyone safe. Adding a disclaimer would be a good idea and shut everyone else up. I hope this doesn't hurt the show.
As the real deal survivalist myself, I find the idea of him wearing lifejackets in white water, sleeping in motels instead of outdoors and any of the other pathetic little stunts I am reading about here, to be absolutely shameless.
How pathetic, it isn't even as if he is doing anything really difficult in any of it. Maybe impressive to silly buggers whose outback experience extends to having seen a cow and a sheep once on a school excursion.
Fake is fake and if it is fake, depicting it as the real deal is just crap. Call it a fictitious series if that is what it is.
Real bush people know that Snakes are easy to catch, they are actually NOT as quick as the human hand. Crocodiles CAN be fought, so long as you concentrate on its jaws, once they are shut, clamp them in both hands, since they have very little strength to open them, but tons worth of closing force. Crocs make good eating too. There is NOWHERE on Earth almost where you cannot collect enough water to survive if you know how.
There are many very simple ways to catch MANY fish if you are in a tidal area especially. The human body can go for many months without food, but only days without water. Sleep is the MOST critical of all. I know all this and much more besides.
HOWEVER.
If I was going to present myself to people as The Man, and demonstrate such things, I would consider it to be not only pathetic, but irresponsible if I did not PROVE the point of what I am trying to show. To merely tell someone to hold a croc's jaws shut and they will be safe, if I only show them using a rubber crocodile, is pathetic and irresponsible. IF I am going to demo the fact of locking a crocodile's jaws, then I had better get a live crocodile and do it live and 100% legit, or else the first silly bugger who believes me and my rubber croc demo, who gets themselves eaten by the first real croc they try it on; is MY FAULT!
Bear may know but he is obviously NOT to be trusted. He is using rubber crocodiles.
Our family enjoys Man VS Wild , Its informative and entertaining with beautiful footage of truley remarkable places from around the world . It would be too bad to loose a terrific show because of a technical '' hiccup ''or two .
i love this show!i think it is important for bear to be safe and teach at the same time
shut up rabbit!
This link to a utube video that shows how little danger he was in at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Plus, I know for a fact his so called survival advice for the lava flows would most likely get you killed.
This is just one example. Many more could be reenacted.
Can't post a link so, go to utube and search volcanochaser
Put me in the 'hotel/shmotel, I think he's great' camp. It's an educational program with dramatic props. So it may not all be real. He's not testifying before Congress so he needn't be held to the perjury standard (not that that standard seems popular amongst witnesses in Congress these days...).
I knew from the first episode that it was probably all fake. But I don't care, because it is very entertaining. You can't expect the guy to risk his life for a TV show, and he does do most of the non-lethal stuff for real. If I feel like watching something educational I watch Survivorman.
Most of his survival tips are good, but I do worry about people being fooled by some of the things he does-like the greenland episode where he swam through freezing water, counting on finding hot springs on the other side.
I've only seen two of the series. The first was a snow mountain range - it was superb and came across as real; that must've been from series 1. Last night I watched the Mexican Copper cannyon from series 2, which did seem to be presented differently - less dramatic, not sure I liked it the same. Its a real shame they have to make all these changes and disclaimers etc. At the end of the day, we can see this guy is capable, or at least has the knowledge, which in its self is fascinating. The way he barrels along adds a dramatic feel, very different to Ray Mere, which is a nice contrast, and stop it from getting boring or being a copy. I cant wait to see all the other episodes I've missed.
