Poor guy. What ever happened to freedom of speech? In America it should NOT be ok to punish people for their beliefs.

I feel for Isaiah. Not only was he rebuked for expressing his opinion in what is an allegedly free country, but he now finds himself unemployed after trying his best to make amends. It seems Isaiah offended one too many homosexuals in Hollywood. His fate was sealed the minute he let his views on homsexuality -- a view shared by the bulk of the world -- be known.

Good riddance! His 'rehab' was obviously just an attempt to save his job. He repeatedly lied about what he did. His role was a privilege; it wasn't a right. If I did what he did at my job, I'd be fired too. He is entitled to all the freedom of speech he wants - in the unemployment line. If someone else on the cast used the 'N' word, do you think keeping them around would hurt group morale?

The freedom of speech that is afforded to American citizens extends only to Gonvernmental control. The Government cannot stifle free speech, this does not affect how a job acts. You cannot go into a job and cuss out the manager then scream 'free speech' just as you cannot expect to be in a position where public image is so important and cause waves.

any sort of attitude towards homosexuality short of complete celebration of it is now a thought crime, and no punishment is too harsh. Washington found out the hard way, did his secular penance, and was thrown to the wolves anyway. Apparently some crimes are too harsh for any forgiveness, including dislike of male homosexuals. Too bad for him he didn't merely kill someone while driving drunk, or slip DHP to some coed - he would still probably be on the show today.

The producers and ABC did the right thing in firing Isaiah. He was paid very well and expected to be a professional while at work. He failed to do it, so they did not renew his contract. This would have happened at any of thousands of private companies in the country. He should pick himself up and be a man and move on.

The only possible imbalance in justice I can see is that he should've been fired the same day that he used the f-word in reference to his co-worker. This is no different than if another co-worker had used the n-word in reference to Isaiah in public or at work. Anyway, his reaction to the non-renewal of his contract by saying 'I did everything they wanted', or something to that effect, proves that he was not sincere in his apparent efforts to be more sympathetic to others. It was a sham. Good riddance!! Buh-bye, Isaiah.

Enough with the token black statements and the 'he offended one too many gays.' Washington was an arrogant bastard who did not know how to socialize with those he thought were beneath his talents. Guess what, jerks come in all shapes, colors and (Rosie) sexual orientations. No amount of counseling can cure it. You either put up with it, stand up to it, or fire his premier ass.

If they wanted to fire him, they would have done it from the very beginning, instead they helped him humiliate himself by going to rehab and then fire him. And lets face it, Him and Sandra Oh, are the best things on that show, so frankly they have already lost a major portion of their fans.
And to the African American, that equate the word N#gg and F, let me educate you. The N word is a curse to the black person and his generation that defines him and his children as being the lowest form of human existence. From the time the word existed, it has been used to refer to anyone as a lower form of human existence. The F word, in the 70's was used as another form of the word gay, then during the Eminem era, it was recognized as a hate word, just like me calling you a retard, which also is offensive.
Now that has been said, I believe ABC should have fired him immediately he confessed he said the word, but they shouldn't have made him humiliate himself, just to fire him at the end. And frankly, T.R Knight is a mean hearted human being, he could have forgiven him like Patrick Dempsy and let him come out being the bigger man, instead he just proved, how a little success can show anyone's ugliness. By ugliness, I am referring to both T.R Knight and Isaiah.
I am not watching Grey's anatomy anymore

Wow...some of the comments I've seen on this page amaze me. I could have sworn we were in the 21st Century! The 'bulk' of America feel the same way about gays that Isiah does...so that makes it right to use slander, and degrading words on the air? On a Mic? In front of reporters? The other posters are right, if any of the White or Non-African descent people had used the N word, none of this would be an issue and the Black community would be calling for their heads. I also love the double standard with Mr. 'Black Man in America' and his comments. Let's not put down the black man...but F all those 'gays' and wierdo Hollywood types. Hypocritical much? It's okay to talk down about gays, but not about blacks? What makes you so special? You think you're the ONLY group in America who's been persecuted? Go back and read a book...you're not alone.

I believe if someone apologizes for something they did wrong, you either forgive and forget at that point or, you take your action immediately. The show producers didn't Fire Isaiah immediately because they wanted to use him to finish up the season, then they axed him.
What we know for sure is, Isaiah wasn't as friendly as T.R Knight on the set, but when he was backed to the wall, he went to rehab, made public announcment and allowed the whole world to make him become a homophobe for a word he didn't directly use on T.R Knight, he just answered a question he was asked. And from what I know, he hasn't admitted initially saying it, with his fight with Dempsey.
Dempsey, on the other hand who was physically abused, had a beautiful heart to let the situation go, after he was approached for forgiveness. Unlike T.R Knight, who for now, happens to be the crueliest gay guy I have ever known, who went to every media and continued helping promote Isaiah being fired, forgetting that before Grey's Anatomy, nobody knew his name. And there was his BFF Katherine Heigl, who only decided to mention that Isaiah, apologized to her, when she was promoting her movie. In my opinion, T.R Knight is a mean hearted creature and I hope he helps get everyone fired and have the whole show about him. For me, I am thru with the show

good riddance.

free speech has nothing to do with this; his continued employment was contingent upon keeping up relations with his bosses and co-workers, and, as he is a public figure, the public. he did not do that--many of his co-workers expressed their anger over his comments and the public, rightly, was outraged.

to whoever commented that his view is held by 'the bulk of the world', what exactly are you saying? homosexuality is not accepted by many people, true, but civilized people learn by the time they're 5 that derogatory terms are wrong...and the word he used does not simply express his lack of acceptance but rather his un-checked hatred for a group that, like it or not, is here to stay. happy he's gone.

Listen to these people, saying a black man can't be a head doctor, blacks are known for hotwiring and al sharpton is a racist because he speaks out about people like you. Make no mistake of it, you are both racist, and if you're gay, then the two of you are gay racists. And make no mistake, gay guys are also racist, and I am sure T.R Knight would be proud of the two of you

If I see a bunch of gay guys or lesbians under a light pole on a city street at 2:00 AM while walking to my car, I'm one hell of a lot less scared than if I see a bunch of black men in the same situation. Can you tell me why? Even a rich black ex-athelete got away with murder in 1994 and you KNOW it's true, too, blood.

I do feel for Isiah because the producers did take a long time to decide his fate, action should have been taken swiftly if it was to be taken. Isiah was probably thinking his job was safe.
As far as the comment went however, language like that can be extremely offensive to people, and Isiah should have been aware of this when speakin in a doman that was most certainly going to become public. There was NO need for the comment, and all it did was undermine and insult his co-star. A complete celebration of homosexuality is not needed, but this sort of abraisivness is not needed

Isaiah is supposed to be a homophobe. Yet, his children have play dates with melissa etheridge's kid. And does who dont know, melissa etheridge is gay. For me, if someone says something in anger, it shouldn't be something that defines a man. I was with a friend of mine and he got pissed off by his boss, and he used the N word in anger, in front of me, without even knowing he used it. Does that make him a racist or someone who spoke in anger. I've known him all my life and I know he is no racist.
Unlike Kumiko, who first believes that black men are incapable of being surgeons and when black people are in a group, they are a potential threat. He choses to ignore Philip Emeagwali, who was one of the fathers on the internet. Mark Dean , (scientist, computer processor, one of original IBM inventors)
James Edward Maceo West, (invented the foil-electret microphone) . Frankly, its pointless educating a racist.

Homosexuals are one of the last groups that can be joked about and actually can be 'punished' by death and certain 'god fearing folks' think it is just dandy. They pick and choose their morality from the Bible or whatever their written moral road map may be, while living the life they choose, want to dictate the life others should live. Black man in america... you need to know what you are talking about before you open your mouth. Oh, did I mention the show was created and written by a Black Woman? No? Didn't mention that yet huh, well it is. Get your crap straight dude. Mr. Washington was fired for being intollerant and hateful. His beliefs are what got him fired, not the color of his skin. And to explain it more, his words expressing his hatred and intollerance toward 'Faggots' are what got him fired. I just wonder how they are going to go on without him because in the season finale there was a bit of a cliff hanger between him and Sandra Oh.

And to correct you all, it wasn't the first use of the word fag that got him fired, it was the second time he used it right in front of all his costars and all the supposed counseling that got him axed.

Regardless of whether or not the majority of the world agrees with Isiah's view on gays, the fair and un-prejudice minorty still fights the bigotry of the majority.

And for all of the other African-Americans who are saying this was a wrong decision - think about if T.R. Knight had called Washington a n***er. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson (who are NOT the spokesmen for us - can't stand it when they take up random causes) would be up in arms.

It's been said that Mr. Washington has always been a hothead. I don't think he much cares for gay people, but I don't think he's necessaryly a 'Homophobe.' Whatever happen to the days when we kept homosexuality in the closet. Those are the days I long for, when if your into having sex with men you keep it to yourself. You keep your behavior and your way of life way back in the closet, and where in the hell to people get off comparing this behavior with the African-American struggle in this country. I am mindful of the extreme cases of hate against those who practice homosexuality, but in comparison with what has happen to blacks. Please, stop.

I have nothing against gays, in fact 60% of my pals are gays, but I have to say that gay or not, TR Knight is just mean! On and off-screen, he makes me sick! All my friends and family won't be watching Grey's anymore. The only thing going for the show was the chemistry between Burke and Yang.

And now Mr. Washington is saying 'They fired the wrong guy', calling himself a victim just like 'Paul Robeson and Malcolm X'. He just doesn't get it...and frankly, he's not fit to compare himself to Robeson and Malcom X. Gimme a break.

it's not about race or bigotry or any of that. He publicly made it known that he hates the gays. A queer plays one of the key roles on the show.
The producers of the show obviously have a gay on the staff. So they BLACK BALLED him. ( get it ? )
TV is all about queers and jews and left wingers these days. Sadly he is the minority in this one but not for the reasons he claims.

1) A person's sexual orientation is not equal to his/her ethnicity. Therefore, using the 'n' word is not equivalent to using the 'f' word, though both are hurtful terms. If you think the two are equal, then this proves that you are a racist; even the ignorant black people that decided to be sheep and side with the ignorant people that compared the two words. All the ignorant people that compared the two should be pushed in front of a bus. Why you say? It is because it is not immoral to have a disapproving opinion of someone's sexual orientation. It is, however, immoral to be prejudice against someone for their ethnicity. Both opinions should never be expressed at one's workplace, however. Isaiah was wrong but he shouldn't be compared to a racist.

2) All of you know that if a white guy called someone the 'f' word on the set, he wouldn't be fired. Hollywood, like so many other parts of America, has a much lower tolerance for black people that make mistakes than they do for Caucasians who do so. I am so tired of people making it seem like the gay guy was such a poor victim--as if he had never been called the 'f' word before. He is such a loser cry-baby who needs to grow some balls and stop sucking on them!!!

True. Racism can never be compared to any sort of bigotry. The AfterElton site happily gave the gays grist for the mill, by asking that ridiculous (seemingly loaded) question...........what if the N-word had been used ...is not the use of F-word just as bad ??
All of them, the media and gays and esp. racists and racist gays being the most rabid......jumped onto the bandwagon. Since AfterElton.com every-biased-one has just been parroting the same meaningless drivel endlessly.

The very people who are denouncing the use of the F-word by comparing it to the N-word ..are the most hate-filled racists ever.........and I do not know how the innocent or ignorant or naive people have not noticed how manipulatively it is being used. I am sure number-wise it is the racial minorities outnumber gays. So if the heart of America bleeds for minorities then why don't they and the media ...support the huge issue of racism. All they do is focus on, magnify and mollycoddle the gays. Are they the priority among minority issues ?

The gays piggy-back on the N-word to further their own cause......whch includes racism. This crazy twisted ways and reasoning they have used is both scary and sickening. N and F words are not and never will be the same. Trivialising racism like that is the work of the racists. The minorities that suffer racism should have made a far greater hue and cry than TRK ever did at this gross misuse and injustice. This manipulation of everyone in America, through media, is extreme. People are BORN into their race. The question of sexual orientation does not even( or at least should not) arise until puberty has been reached.

Where is the comparison ?????? It is a paradoxical argument used by the racists to use the N-word as a comparison in order to subject people like IW to racism in a very twisted way actually.

TY to AfterElton.com for being so simplistically manipulative. They been so clever that you even have the blacks apologising for IW. How clever. Also, how media converted a non-homophobe into one by brainwashing on and on, until the poor man himself had to act like he beleived he was one. Wow.
