I agree that we do have freedom of speech, but your comments do have consequences. Mr. Washington comments were very unprofessional and he should not be allowed to create a hostile work environment where his co workers should have to be uncomfortable. He is not new to Hollywood, he is an established actor and should have known better. His later comment made after his firing make it apparent that he did not truly mean his apology to the gay community.
It's just another case of a celebrity spouting off before they think. Politicians are in the same boat. Why people in the public eye can't seem to get it across that anything they say could and will be printed, so they better wise up or they'll obviously suffer the consequences.
His views aren't shared by 'the bulk of the world' - unless you mean the 'underworld'!
I understand that he tried to 'fix things' but it simply was not enough.
I am an African-American woman who was raised not to care if people were gay, straight, orange, striped, etc... If I were gay and a co-worker called me a derogatory name, I would expect them to be let go - no matter how many PSAs or counseling sessions they attended.
And for all of the other African-Americans who are saying this was a wrong decision - think about if T.R. Knight had called Washington a n***er. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson (who are NOT the spokesmen for us - can't stand it when they take up random causes) would be up in arms.
Being a black straight woman I truly believe that you have to suffer the consequences of your actions. I would find it unacceptable for a white person to call me a N****r so of course I feel for T.R. Knight and any other homosexuals. Don Imus was fired after saying Nappy headed hoes! so why shouldn't he be fired after not saying it once but twice in a public area. I am pissed because he turned my view of him and the positive black character on my favorite show into a negative perception of what a human being should be like. Yes we can forgive but after making a total fool of yourself by showing your true ignorance, I say 'I will miss the character but you have to reap what you sow!
Dear Jane,
At least I can spell Isaiah's name: I-S-A-I-A-H. If you would stop munching friend chicken and slobbering into watermelon long enough, you might be able to, as well.
Now, put your tiki torches out, stop beating the drums and get some well earned sleep.
Kumiko in A Far Distant, Idyllic Place (With a job!)
TO KUMIKO LEE
FRIEND chicken huh? not living up to the stereotype that white people place on asians I see. MIGHT I SUGGEST GETTING YOUR GED BECAUSE CLEARLY YOU CLEARLY YOU CANNOT EVEN SPELL FRIED CHICKEN CORRECTLY.
'I feel for Isaiah. Not only was he rebuked for expressing his opinion in what is an allegedly free country, but he now finds himself unemployed after trying his best to make amends. It seems Isaiah offended one too many homosexuals in Hollywood. His fate was sealed the minute he let his views on homsexuality -- a view shared by the bulk of the world -- be known.'
???
He called his coworker a fag and outed him nationally.
He was a bigot. He was not professional. He was stupid.
He deserved it.
Look,
I do not agree that we should go around calling others names, My comments were said with my tongue planted firmly in cheek. But there is also some truth in what I have said. When one is made to suppress their true feelings they become a dangerous snake in the grass. I for one would rather know a persons feelings then to have them kept under wraps. It's been said that Mr. Washington has always been a hothead. I don't think he much cares for gay people, but I don't think he's necessaryly a 'Homophobe.' To me that would mean he would want a person whom is gay to be harmed....One can dislike another's life, background or even hair color and not 'Hate them.'
So being im white, if i made racial slurs against BLACKS, like he did against Gays,,,you KNOW i would be fired, and crucified as well. Good thing he is fired. So when is sharpton getting involved?
i would be interested to see if Al Sharpton could put a spin on this one.
It is a free country but in a place of business (yes, acting is a job) there are certain rules and guidelines to follow. He did not follow them. Who knows - maybe it is more than the F-word. Supposedly, he had been difficult in other situations on set as well. He will be fine.
I am glad this happened. Somewhat. I had to watch the show with my girlfriend, and she is devastated by this. But look at in terms of discrimination. If someone on the show used the N word and it offended Washington like that, that person would be fired so quickly they wouldn't even have to use a story. And everyone would be behind them. Look at Micheal richards- he made a mistake, but that doesn't change that it happened. As a result, he can't perform at the Laugh Factory again. Yes. Washington made a mistake, and yes, I'm sure he is truly sorry, but EVERYTHING has consequences.
That was a good thing for isiah you can`t say you call him evil for using the word faggot the faggots is the ones that are evil a bunch of sticks the moral decline and the destruction of America continues hollywood promoting homosexuals lifestyles GOD will destroy you homos your life will be shortened for being gay there will be no reward for you in the kingdom of God the fire of god will reign down and destroy you if you don`t repent.I Hope God takes away all your money and see how gay you`ll be then.WOE TO THOSE THAT CALL GOOD EVIL AND EVIL GOOD.
Now, if they will just write the whiney Asian drama queen out of the script, I MIGHT watch it once in a while. I only watch any way to catch a glimpse of Izzy or the red-haired doctor.
Freedom of speech doesn't extend to your employer. Man some of you people are stupid.
I spoke to him earlier. He was like, 'Gays are awesome, hey look at the douchebag four or five posts above you haha'
I really get tired of the fringe weirdo population trying to force the rest of us to believe they are normal.::It ain't gonna happen Brucie'''
There is a large group among the media types that thing they have the right to force their weird ideas on the general population, just because they have the outlet to do so.
I say rebel against it, boycott their shows and force them to take notice of the normal folks.
i'm glad to see this minority pc bs starting to work both ways. course it isn't equal yet, maybe in a couple hundred years. then we can flip it around and say we have been oppressed, give us reparations yada yada...
i think it is horrible, he should of not gotten fired i will no longer watch the stupid A' show. just cause he said faggot. what happened to freedom of speech, they cannot replace him with anyone, no one can fill his shoes, no one.
