Venezuelans protest TV network closure: Chavez silences opponents

Thousands and thousands of irate Venezuelans have marched in the streets of Caracas on Saturday chanting "Freedom, Freedom!" to bitterly protest President Hugo Chavez's order not to renew the broadcast license of the country's most-watched TV station, an outlet for his opposition. EPA/CHICO SANCHEZProtesters marched along police manned streets holding signs reading "No to silence," while others placed tape over their mouths, reported the AP.Radio Caracas Television, RCTV, is the only TV station with nationwide reach that features criticism to Chavez' communistic bent, and it is going off the air at midnight Sunday. Chavez is silencing critics of his leftist government, along with other gross misappropriations of government powers that have been foisted upon the Venezuelans, has caused the people to march in the streets protesting.The AP reports "RCTV broadcasts a mix of talk shows, sports, soap operas and the popular comedy program 'Radio Rochela,' which often pokes fun at Chavez."Chavez has accused RCTV of supporting a failed 2002 coup against him, violating broadcast laws and regularly showing programs with excessive violence and sexual content.source
