Mary-Kate Olsen has landed a lead role in US TV show 'Weeds' - and will appear without her twin Ashley.

Mary-Kate will play Tara, a God-fearing girl living in the newly established Christian community, Majestic. Tara becomes the love interest of Silas, played by Hunter Parrish.

A series producer said: "'Weeds' isn't your eight o'clock family fare. It's an adult show and adult subject matter, and we're confident Mary-Kate is right for the role. She came in and read with Hunter and was absolutely charming and real and seemed like a great fit.

"Audiences have seen only one side of Mary-Kate, but here we'll see her in a whole new light."

The 20-year-old actress is scheduled to appear in 10 of the 15 episodes of the third season of the show, which premieres in the US in August.

Mary-Kate's role in the black comedy series is noticeably different from the wholesome characters she and Ashley played on ABC's comedy series 'Full House'.

After their stint on the series ended, Mary-Kate and Ashley starred in a number of children's TV series and movies, including 'So Little Time' and 'New York Minute'.

This isn't the first time Mary-Kate has appeared on screen without her twin. She made a fleeting non-speaking appearance in 'Factory Girl'.
