This week on Finding Jesus: Faith, Fact, Forgery, the documentary series examines the house that is thought by some to have been the place where Jesus grew up.
In the bible it says that Jesus grew up in ‘a city of Galilee’ called Nazareth. Now Nazareth is a bustling town of over 70,000 people lying in Northern Israel and is often called the Arab capital of the country.
Beneath a 19th century convent lie some interesting ruins that some believe could have once been home to Jesus. If they are then it would be a remarkable discovery and would be something that really puts his existence as a historical figure into context.
However, proving that someone lived in a specific house a few thousand years after they were alive is pretty tricky. Outside of the bible, the earliest reference we have to just the city of Nazareth itself is in an inscription dated around 300 A.D., centuries after biblical Jesus was said to have lived there.
