Dancing with the Stars Season 10 Beauty Report

This is our third year covering the amazing team on ABC’s hit series “Dancing with the Stars,” invited into the glittery, gleamy super-fabulous realm of Emmy award-winning department makeup artist Melanie Mills and her crack crew, Patti Ramsey Bertoli, Zena Shteysel, Angela Moos, Barbi Fonte and Nadege Schoenfeld, where all the tricks of the trade secrets are revealed.
Mills is a child of the world, studying art in Italy and traveling abroad early in life, training her gifted eye to interpret and blend color and textures, a skill now honed on a show that has a crafts/department domino effect behind the scenes.
As soon as the ballroom dance styles of a show are determined, costuming dictates the wardrobe. Melanie takes those costumer sketches and swatches to the makeup trailer and conceptualizes how each star she is responsible for will look on the stage.

Mills recreates looks from bygone eras to compliment selected music and wardrobe, and so the entire picture is authentic and helps each contestant mentally get into character so they can nail that intricate dance move.

Just as the Tango has precise wardrobe and hairstyles, the makeup for that smoldering dance is wildly different from a bubbly, optimisitic American Jive or Foxtrot.

The Latin dances bare lots more skin and makeup tones tend to veer in shades of bronzes, rich brown-based reds and lots of smoke and sizzle. The Waltze and the Paso Doble are more formal and you will notice more precisely lined eyes, lips and cleaner, brighter makeup looks. These very distinct designs are then given to her able crew who carry out the plan to make a seamless effort between hair, makeup and costuming.

At a September 2009 M.A.C. event that celebrated Melanie and her team's hard work, dancers took to the stage performing six demonstrations for an audience of her makeup artist peers (MAHS local 706 I.A.T.S.E.), who learned how makeup was interpreted for each dance.

Melanie shared with Monsters and Critics her philosophy on approaching the makeup crafts with this show. “I wanted to bring you up close so you can personally see the makeup and feel the art in motion. Ballroom makeup is a necessity to stand out on the dance floor during competition. It’s used to enhance the drama of the performance and make a statement to the judges. Hair is typically colored ultra white blonde, bright red or raven black always with extreme styles. Makeup is ultra big with dark orange tans.”

This past week saw Pamela Anderson styled a la Sophia Loren. Melanie shared what arsenal of product was used for that look: “I used Stila's Gerbera on the cheeks with M.A.C.'s Deep Peach powder on top. Kevyn Aucoin's Tatjanaberry lipstick and Lancome liner in Natural Blonde. M.A.C.'s gel eyeliner in Ostentatious too.”
Not only are Mel and her team adept with the color, but they're all beautiful women who have the most exquisite complexions. They share their skincare finds with their celebrities, and insist many use these products so their canvas is tip-top perfect to apply the makeup on.
But before makeup is applied, the most crucial step of all is the bronzing and self-tanning process, courtesy of blue-chip series standby: St. Tropez sunless skincare, ground zero for this show.
St. Tropez products are superior in color, scent and durability. The contestants must be hairless. Recommended and given to the stars is the Silk'n SensEpil machine, the show’s go-to hair remover that kills follicles with a burst of light.
Skin must be prepped further, exfoliated and scrubbed down, and then sprayed all over with their weekly first application of St. Tropez spray tan via airbrushing.
This glow bath is preserved by body makeup expert Nadege’s careful eye as she uses St. Tropez bronzing mousse and sprays to touch up, then finish skin with Mel’s Mix, a foundation/bronzer lotion (created by Melanie) that perfects skin and intensifies the bronze glow. It is the most amazing body finish on planet Earth. Once rubbed in and dried, it stays put until you shower. If I were loaded, I’d buy vats of it and roll around in it every day before dressing.

Technique for application is old school for Mills’ team; everything is applied by hand and brush, and the versatile pink Beauty Blender. “We don't airbrush makeup,” shared Mills. “Of course we all know how and there have been times that it's been busted out, but we work with too many foundation colors, along with cream blushes and cream contours. I feel that by working with a paint brush it works the makeup in more and becomes one with the skin.”

So without further ado, step-by-step in sequential order, take note of the real deal that Mills & Company swear by that deliver the looks for “Dancing with the Stars” for season ten, a small selection of the go-to products:
