On tonight’s Joyride, racing driver Brian Vickers and actress Mischa Barton take a classic 1985 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce for a spin.
Earlier in the episode Brian is ripping up the obstacle course in an old BMW and says: “You can tell why this car was so popular in the 80s…it looks great, handles so well, everything you want a car to be. this is a sexy cougar, when a car is older and still hold his own…As far as cars from the 80s this is a tough one to beat.”
However, they do beat it in the classic Alpha, though the car starts to fall apart a bit inside as they put it through the ringer.
Mischa loves the it and says: “The 1985 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce… it feels like you should be driving in the Italian Countryside to Tuscany. It’s [like] a little piece of Europe…there’s something special about them.”
Brian agrees: “You can really see the design inspiration from Ferrari.”
“She’s a sturdy little thing,” says Mischa as they take hairpin turns, then the shifter comes off in Brian’s hand!
The Spider’s head-turning style came courtesy of Pininfarina, the Italian design firm that helped to shape of modern-day Ferrari for years.
Veloce was powered by a 2-liter double overhead cam four-cylinder engine but when the Italians added Bosh fuel injection in the nineteen eighties the Spider’s fun factor doubled by boosting the horsepower.
Joyride airs on Esquire Network at 10 PM ET/PT.
