Smallscreen - The Dog Whisperer

With an Emmy-nominated show on National Geographic Channel, a best-selling book, and sold-out seminars, Cesar Millan continues to add accolades to a career spanning more than 20 years, as one of the most sought-after experts in dog psychology. From bullying Chihuahuas to timid great Danes to "last chance" mixed-breeds, this "Dr. Phil for dogs" is renowned for his uncanny ability to communicate with dogs and see the world through their eyes.
Cesar was born in Culiacan, Mexico, and spent much of his youth at his grandfather's ranch. He spent years observing the pack of wild dogs that lived there, learning and coming to understand their behaviors. It was his grandfather who taught him the one lesson he still uses in his work today: "Never work against Mother Nature."
As a child, Cesar was also fascinated by TV dogs, "Rin Tin Tin" and "Lassie" and the behind-the-scenes people training them. It was during that time that he decided he would move to the United States to become "the best dog trainer in the world." Years later, he found himself in San Diego working as a dog groomer. His knack for dealing with even the most hard-to-handle dogs became apparent to clients, who started to ask him for help with their dogs' behavior problems.
Cesar's unique "Power of the Pack" methodology comes from his keen understanding of canine pack behavior. While most dog trainers relate to one animal at a time, Cesar often uses the pack itself—the natural social unit for canines—to rehabilitate a wayward dog. He demonstrates this with his own pack of up to 50 dogs, including rescued Rottweilers, pit bulls, and German shepherds that are able to live together harmoniously.
Cesar first captured the national spotlight when his National Geographic Channel (NGC) series Dog Whisperer premiered in 2004. Now in its third season, the show was recently nominated for a 2006 Emmy® Award for "Outstanding Reality Program."
Each episode of Dog Whisperer takes viewers into the homes of troubled dogs and their frustrated owners, documenting the remarkable rehabilitations that take place-both canine and human. His philosophy of rehabilitating dogs and training people shows that many dog owners, in their desire to give their pets love and affection, don't establish a leadership role, leaving the dog in control.
In three short years, Cesar has cultivated legions of loyal fans and clientele, including celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Denise Richards, Daisy Fuentes, Nicolas Cage, Scarlett Johannson, and Hilary Duff. He's given hundreds of print and radio interviews, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, USA Today, and National Public Radio and has appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "The "Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Live with Regis and Kelly," "The View," "The Today Show," "Martha," and CNN. He's even been parodied on Comedy Central's hit show, "South Park."
