“Is Agoura Hills part of the San Fernando Valley?” asks ‘She Wants Revenge’ front man Justin Warfield.
The crowd responds “no.”
He says, “Well it’s close enough to the SFV for us to say that this is our first time playing our home town!”
This past Father’s Day at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, a city outside of the greater SFV and Los Angeles area, ‘She Wants Revenge’ and openers Nico Vega each put on an excellent show.
The opening act Nico Vega had a truly unique sound that showcased Psychedelic-tinged hard rock sound with Sonic Youth style delivery.
Nico Vega is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2005. The band is lead by singer Aja Volkman, guitarist Rich Koehler and drummer Dan Epand. The band is known for their dynamic live performances led by Volkman.
Their set that night consisted of tripped out riffs from a heavily affected guitar, incredible drumming, and great vocals and stage presence from lead singer Aja Volkman.
Her singing went from melodically beautiful to straight up raw emotion filled. Her vocal style has been compared to Joan Jett and Janis Joplin.
She would pick up a bass drum during the set and start pounding away to the beat. She picked up drum sticks and pounded away on the drummer’s toms and cymbals during one song.
Though I had never heard them before, their live performance blew me away, because even if they are opening, they can win over the crowd within the first song.
‘She Wants Revenge’ put on one of the best live performances I have seen this year, I would describe their sound as deep piercing monotone vocals, Joy Division guitar and bass sound, Bauhaus drum beats and new wave synth lines.
They played many songs off their new album Valleyheart such as “Must Be the One” which I found was my favorite of their new songs, and the hits from their self titled album that everyone loved: The intense sing along from the crowd that was “These Things”, the beat-less 2 Guitars and a Bass version of “Tear you Apart” which I found was awesome, and dance heavy set closer “Out of Control” had the entire crowd dancing.
It is very rare for a band to capture your attention like that and even more rare to be consistently good throughout a whole set. ‘She Wants Revenge’ did that and I can easily say that they are one of my new favorite live acts.
