About
Swamp People is a reality series on History that follows teams of alligator hunters in the bayous and swamps of Louisiana’s Atchafalaya River Basin.
The filming takes place during the 30-day alligator-hunting season which starts each year on the first Wednesday of September.
During this time it is legal to hunt and kill alligators, the carcasses of which are then sold on the open market. Each season hunters are given a certain number of tags to attach to the animals they kill.
Once they use them up they ‘tag out’ and their season is over. As the number of tags is limited, the bigger the alligators they catch the better, but the main aim is to use them up before the season ends. Read more
The Swamp People cast features a motley crew of larger-than-life personalities. Some members have been on the show since Season 1, including ‘King of the Swamp’ Troy Landry and his son Jacob along with William ‘Willie’ Edwards.
The hunters are often based in different locations, including Pierre Part and Bayou Black.
