Paris - A European Ariane 5 cargo rocket launched late Friday from Kourou, French Guiana, carrying two satellites into orbit.

The liftoff is the fifth Ariane 5 launch of 2006 and the seventh consecutive successful mission for the European single-use cargo rocket.

The AMC 18, designed to beam cable television into the US, and the WildBlue 1, intended to carry broadband internet services, both owned by US companies, made up the rocket's satellite payload. Both are being positioned over the Pacific.

The satellites have a combined weight of 6.8 tonnes.
