EU declares climate alliance with 120 countries
Dec 8, 2011, 17:05 GMT
Durban, South Africa - The European Union sealed an alliance Thursday with 120 of the world's poorest countries and island states during climate change negotiations in Durban, South Africa.
Delegates from Poland, which holds the current EU presidency, along with those from Gambia and Bangladesh, made the announcement hours before the UN climate talks were due to end on Friday.
German Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen told reporters that the coalition of about 120 countries - a majority of the more than 190 states meeting in Durban - was sending a message to the largest producers of carbon emissions outside of Europe that the EU and the developing world were united.
'I wouldn't call it a call for help, but rather a clear appeal,' Roettgen said. 'We cannot wait 10 more years and do nothing.'
