World Bank to give Laos 30 million dollars to combat climate change

Jun 8, 2011, 8:20 GMT

Vientiane - Laos is one of eight countries selected by the World Bank under its 348-million-dollar Forest Investment Programme, aimed at reducing deforestation to curb climate change, media reports said Wednesday.

'We will receive about 30 million dollars for the implementation of this project in Laos,' director general of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's Forestry Department Silavanh Sawathvong told the state-run Vientiane Times.

The other countries to benefit from the World Bank programme are Brazil, Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico, Ghana, Peru and Burkina Faso.

As part of its programme in Laos, the World Bank will provide 227,000 dollars to help the country develop a strategic plan for forestry conservation and reforestation by November, Silawanh said.

Laos lost about 134,000 hectares of forest each year between 1992 and 2002.

Laos' forest coverage fell from 64 per cent in 1960 to 41 per cent in 2001.
