Endangered fish taken off the menu at UAE hotel
May 21, 2011, 13:01 GMT
Fujairah, UAE - A hotel in the United Arab Emirates has removed endangered fish species such as grouper and kingfish from its menus to save them from extinction.
The hotel in the UAE's Fujairah emirate instead is presenting clients with an apology note titled 'Choose wisely' to explain the reasons behind the decision, said Patrick Antaki, general manager at the resort.
'Most people welcomed our decision and expressed their desire to help us in such efforts,' Antaki told the German Press Agency dpa.
'The administration took the decision after they read reports by the Emirates Wildlife Society and the Global Fund for Conservation of Nature, showing that certain species will disappear in the next few years,' he said.
The Fujairah-based resort is also educating its visitors about the consequences of overfishing endangered species, and how to choose their meals in a sustainable way.
