Sep 21, 2010, 20:50 GMT
New York - Japan on Tuesday announced the three winners of the rich Midori (Green) Prizes to support the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
High-ranking government officials are scheduled to meet Wednesday at UN headquarters in New York to discuss a global strategy to protect the world's bio-diversity and health of ecosystems, which contribute to human wellbeing.
Japan's Environment Ministry and the AEON environmental foundation said recipients of the 800,000-dollar prizes are Jean Lemire of Canada, Gretchen Daily of the United States and Emil Salim of Indonesia.
The winners are described by the judges for the Midori Prizes as Persons of Biodiversity because of their outstanding contributions to the conservation of biodiversity and work to raise awareness on issues related to biodiversity.
The winners will receive their prizes when parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity meet in October in Nagoya, Japan.
