San Francisco introduces compulsory composting law

San Francisco - Cementing its status as the greenest city in the US, San Francisco has introduced a compulsory composting law as part of its plan to completely stop sending rubbish to landfills and incinerators by 2020, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday. The ordinance will take effect later this year and will require every residence and business in the city to have three separate colour-coded bins for waste: blue for recycling, green for compost and black for trash. Residents who fail to properly sort their refuse - which includes composting all food wastes - will face initial fines capped at 100 dollars, while businesses can be fined 500 dollars. The city currently diverts 72 per cent of its waste from landfills via recycling, but hopes that the new program will allow it to divert 90 per cent. 'San Francisco has the best recycling and composting programs in the nation,' said Mayor Gavin Newsom, who praised the Board of Supervisor's 9-2 vote on the plan. 'We can build on our success.'
