Sarkozy not willing to compromise on EU climate package

Paris - French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Tuesday that he would not accept any watering down of his ambitious climate package at this week's EU summit, the head of the centre-left faction in the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. During a meeting with a group of EU parliamentarians in Paris, the serving EU president said that negotiations over the package would not result in 'a compromise at any cost.' No details about the meeting were provided, but Schulz said, 'Quite frankly, I wondered why I came to Paris at all.' The meeting had been intended to build up mutual trust, he said. The climate package will be the primary issue at the EU summit, to be held Thursday and Friday in Brussels. Among other things, EU leaders must decide how to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by the year 2020. The European Parliament will then vote on the package, probably later this month.
