Axe buildings to cool overheated European cities, expert says
Apr 2, 2008, 17:29 GMT
Munich - European cities will have to rip down buildings that block cool nighttime breezes during a battle with blistering summer heat, a German academic, Carl Beierkuhnlein, warned Wednesday.
Speaking at a conference in Munich on climate change, Beierkuhnlein, who is a professor of landscape ecology at the University of Bayreuth, said global warming would heat up cities more than the countryside.
The answer would be 'cold air channels' to ventilate closed city blocks, he said. 'In some cases we'll have to rip buildings down.'
Saying there would be no time to wait for long-term research in the coming urban hotspots, she said, 'In the next 10 to 20 years, we face greater changes than have been seen on Earth for 100,000 years.
'If we can't get an inflow of cold air at night, we'll never achieve a healthy urban climate.'
The symposium, organized by two of Bavaria's state health agencies, was attended by 200 experts.
