EU calls for space-age green database

Brussels - The European Union should set up a space-age system to allow experts and ordinary citizens to monitor real-time changes to air and water quality and other environmental factors, officials in Brussels said Tuesday. The proposed Shared Environment Information System (SEIS) should 'tie better together all existing data-gathering and information flows using modern tools such as the internet and satellite technology,' a statement from the European Commission said. The EU is already home to a patchwork of environmental monitoring schemes which report to national governments and EU organs. However, 'this wealth of information is neither made available in a timely manner nor in a format that policy-makers and the public can readily understand and use,' the statement said. The SEIS is intended to bridge that gap by linking the various different national and regional monitoring and reporting schemes into a single internet-based system. The commission is expected to present a detailed plan for the SEIS project later this year.
