Greek archaeologists find ancient statue of goddess Artemis

Athens - Greek archaeologists have uncovered an ancient statue of the goddess Artemis during a dig in central Greece, Greek Culture Minister Giorgos Voulgariakis said Monday. The 80-centimetre long torso of the statue, which dates from the 1st century BC, was found completely intact near the region of Thessalia. Officials said the original statue measured more than 1.60 metres and efforts were underway by archaeologists to locate the goddess' head and arms. Artemis, the daughter of almighty Zeus and Leto, was depicted in ancient Greek mythology as the goddess of the wilderness, fertility and the hunt. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
