Europeans to put unmanned lander on Mars in 2011

Berlin - European nations agreed Tuesday in Berlin on a space-exploration budget that will include an unmanned mission to land on Mars in 2011, Jean-Jacques Dordain, director general of the European Space Agency (ESA) said. The ESA, which is funded by 17 European nations and Canada, has been keen to recover its standing after a British built Mars lander, the Beagle 2, crashed on Mars in December 2003. Another Mars mission was one of the projects competing for funds. Dordain spoke at the end of a two-day meeting of the ESA council of ministers. They also agreed to boost ESA's 400-million-euro budget for science by 2.5 per cent annually over the next five years. © dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
