Nature groups say North Sea spill hits 10,000 birds

Kappeln, Germany - A mysterious oil spill in the North Sea at the start of this week is likely to have clogged the feathers of up to 10,000 birds, a nature group said Friday. 'They have found more than 1,000 oily or dead birds, but we would assume 10 times as many were affected,' said Wolfgang Apel, president of the German Society for the Protection of Animals in Kappeln near the Danish border. The oil spill near the island of Foehr has dispersed, but was photographed by German marine police who are trying to discover who caused it. Lumps of oil began washing ashore on Foehr on Sunday. An animal treatment centre on the island has been cleaning the detergent off birds found by holidaymakers and public officials. Animal groups say surviving birds swim in every direction while dead ones are scattered by tides and currents.
