Nations on course to meet Kyoto targets, UN body says
Nov 20, 2007, 13:38 GMT
Bonn, Germany - Targets listed in the Kyoto protocol are likely to be met, according to new data disclosed Tuesday by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).
Greenhouse gas emissions by industrial nations that signed and ratified the protocol are likely to decease 11 per cent by 2012 compared to 1990, UNFCC executive secretary Yvo de Boer said.
The Kyoto Protocol commits industrialized countries to a 5 per cent reduction target from 2008-2012 compared to 1990.
But while the European Union as a whole is projected to achieve its objective making use of Kyoto mechanisms such as emissions trading, other Kyoto parties are expected to see an upward trend in emissions, the Bonn-based UNFCC said.
The UNFCC presented its emissions data findings two weeks ahead of a United Nations climate conference on Bali at which negotiations on a post-Kyoto deal are expected to be launched.
