Beijing - Some 29 per cent of the world's species are under threat of extinction, a report issued by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) said Friday.

Mankind's closest living relatives - apes, monkeys, lemurs and other primates - are under unprecedented threat from destruction of tropical forests, the illegal wildlife trade and commercial bushmeat hunting, the report said.

Climate change is also exacerbating the problem.

The Primates in Peril report compiled by 60 experts from 21 countries warns that failure to respond now will bring the first primate extinctions in more than a century.

Overall, 114 of the world's 394 primate species are classified as threatened with extinction on the IUCN Red List.

'The situation is worst in Asia, where tropical forest destruction and the hunting and trading of monkeys puts many species at terrible risk. Even newly discovered species are severely threatened from loss of habitat and could soon disappear,' said the chairman of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Primate Specialist Group Russell A Mittermeier.

The IUCN experts were meeting on the southern Chinese island of Hainan.

The organization is the world's largest conservation network and brings together 83 countries and more than 800 NGOs.

...they did not blame it all on global warming. Most of it is habitat destruction.

If there was real concern by any country about the plight of extinction to any animals or fish or birds withing their borders then they would impose penalties, including death sentences for thos who kill, or harm or threaten the least of these endangered creatures.

Now there is a libnazi piece of morality for you: let's put a person to death for killing an endangered species! What's THAT say about preservation of life???

I knew liberals just had it in you! Now, if we could only get you to agree on the human predators...

About global warming, this piece somehow a bit different from the unsubstantiated ranting from SP4,savor what a real scientist has to say about his idol GW Bush and the way information that disturbs the pretty picure tha White House paints as treated by your great leader

...global warming. Most species exinction is due to habitat destruction directly by man. This has been borne out by numerous scientists. If you miss what's wrong, how will you ever fix it.

The Gorilla is hunted and it's habitat destroyed by logging, fire and to some degree wars. Global climate change has about zero to do with it.

Add to that, the dismal performance of the libnazi envirojihad's impact on species preservation and you have the ultimate jerk-a-thon.

Another stellar comment by Rush Limbaugh and it's Validity: Libnazis never measure their results, just their intentions.

I guess that makes you, Tonny, just a-little-moore-than-full-of-crap! Try being part of the solution, for a change, and not some empty pimp for Al Gore's new church.

SP4: One other question, TonnyNov 2nd, 2007 - 23:05:29

How come Gorilla and other specie's numbers were declining when scientists were predicting global cooling in the 1970's?

Do a computer plot on that and, by all means, get back to us!

Meanwhile, out on the real frontier, the Martians are trying to invent sunscreen:

And so are the Plutonians:

Mind you, MIT is hardly a bastion of right-wing capitalists.

Oh, I nearly forgot! Neptune is having a climate crisis as well:

And so is Jupiter!

But global warming here on Earth cannot possibly have anything to do with the sun, now can it? Oh, no! Of course not! It's those nasty hairless apes that are screwing everything up! Something MUST be done about THEM! Let's put them all in chains so we can work them to death! We'll call it taxing the 'rich' to 'save the poor' and to 'save the planet'.

Folks, this is the largest load of alarmist crap to have ever been foisted on an unsuspecting since the Social Security Act.

Do we have global warming? Yes! Are we the cause? No! Are we getting ready to deal with the global warming? No! We are too busy trying to ruin the economy in the name of a leftist-dystopia to actually do anything about the problem. We don't really want solutions. WE WANT THE ISSUE! We can't put collars and chains on you unless we frighten you all into our carefully crafted political cages.
