Chur, Switzerland - A Swiss amateur palaeontologist has discovered what is thought could be the oldest known fossilised footprints belonging to the sauropod family of dinosaurs, it was revealed Wednesday.
School teacher Rico Stecher from Chur, in eastern Switzerland, found the footprints near Berguen in Canton Grisons.
They are believed to have belonged to one of the giant herbivores that roamed the Earth 200 million years ago.
Stecher discovered the prints, measuring 60 centimetres in diameter, last year but they have now been examined by an expert at the Natural History Museum in Basel who revealed his findings to journalists Wednesday. The sauropod would have been six metres long and two metres high.
